Pectinidae
The Latin family name Pectinidae
means “comb” and possibly refers to the comb-like appearance of scallop
shells. Scallops are saltwater clams
that can actually swim by rapidly opening and closing their valves. Their shells are one of the most recognized seashells
and have been depicted in art and architecture throughout history around the
world.
