Chaetodon auriga
The Hawaiian name for this fish is Kikakapu, meaning “strongly prohibited.” Kikakapu
refers to several species of Butterflyfish, and suggests sacred associations. The species name from the Latin word auriga, means “charioteer”, possibly
because of the whip-like dorsal fin. The
Threadfin Butterflyfish measures up to eight inches (20 cm) long and forages on
sand-dwelling invertebrates.
